Walk into the wet end of almost any modern paper machine and you will find some form of cationic starch being dosed into the stock just before the headbox. It is one of the most common wet-end additives in the industry, and the reason comes down to basic chemistry: paper fiber is negatively charged, and cationic starch is not.
Native starch carries little to no electrical charge. Cationic starch is native starch that has been chemically modified to carry a positive charge, typically by reacting it with a quaternary ammonium compound during processing. That positive charge is the entire point of the modification.
Cellulose fibers, mineral fillers like calcium carbonate, and the fine particles (“fines”) suspended in the pulp slurry all carry a negative surface charge. When cationic starch is added to this mixture, its positive charge is drawn to these negative surfaces, causing the starch to adsorb onto fiber and filler particles rather than simply diluting into the water.
Once adsorbed onto fiber surfaces, cationic starch does two things at once. First, it acts as a bridge, helping bind fine particles and filler to the larger fiber network rather than letting them wash out with the white water. Second, the starch itself adds strength once the sheet dries, since it forms hydrogen bonds between fibers at points of contact.
This combination of retention and strength is why cationic starch is usually classified as a wet-end strength and retention aid rather than just a generic additive: it solves two problems with a single dosing point.
Cationic starch is used across a wide range of paper and board grades, including kraft paper, duplex and triplex board, and writing and printing paper.
